Nextcloud is an extremely powerful suite that helps you manage and share your files, media, calendar, contacts and what not.
Evaluate your needs and make up your mind how you will be using Nextcloud. Feel free to set up any kind of Nextcloud clients to power up your sophisticated workflows.
Nextcloud is running as a standalone web application on the Edge. You can access it through a web browser.
- There is a powerful client application for Android published on both F-Droid and Google Playstore. It allows for automated synchronisation and backup of media and files.
- There is a client application for iOS that should allow for relatively the same functionality as the Android one. We do not have any experience with it.
- There is a CalDAV and CardDAV client application for Android named DAVx⁵, which allows for automated synchronization and backup of calendar events and contacts. The application can be found on F-Droid.
There are official desktop applications for Linux, Apple, and Microsoft Windows that provide convenient integration with Nextcloud. In this way you will be able to use a mounted network volume and also automatically synch and backup arbitrary data in both directions.
You can download desktop client applications from the official Nextcloud website.
We have thoroughly evaluated several solutions and
- Nextcloud is the only one which provides outstanding integration across devices.
- Nextcloud allows for all of the vital workflows that we have in mind, i.e. it manages and shares files, media, contacts and empowers various collaboration flows, such as several users working in parallel on a single document, spreadsheet, etc.
- Nextcloud is entirely open source, i.e. its functionality is not artificially constrained in any way.
- Nextcloud
- ownCloud - we didn't find any good reasons to prefer ownCloud over Nextcloud.
- Pydio Cells v4 - a really promising solution implemented in Golang. No good way for synchronising across devices yet and performance issues make it a good candidate for future evaluation.
- Seafile - really vague evaluation as many key features are commercially licensed.
