The Liberated Edge is a holistic and structured technical approach standardizing the self hosting of select group of open source applications in a hobby/home setting.
Our goal is to liberate your personal digital life by helping you enable core user journeys, gain independence and own your data.
¶ What is The Edge?
The Edge is any device that you fully own and use to publish and expose applications and services on the Internet. Edge devices are usually physically close to you and fully controlled by you.
The self hosted applications and services could be of many sorts. It is key is that all of them are open source applications.
As of today "living on the Edge" - so to say - may be challenging and a bit of a rough ride. There are a couple of significant benefits, though. You own your data and you fully manage the access to it. That makes you free. It does liberate your digital life. It has the potential to liberate also the lives of your close ones and the small communities that we all tend to form.
¶ How does The Liberated Edge help me?
There are ways in which The Liberated Edge can help everyone ramp up with hosting their own services on their own hardware.

Providing thorough step-by-step descriptions that everyone can use to implement the aforementioned architecture concept on their own.

Curating a list of fine, high-quality open source applications that can be published as services on the Edge.

Sharing complete step-by-step guidelines for configuring and maintaining both the apps in the curated list and the respective OS and packages running on servers on the Edge.

Fully automating the setup and configuration of both the Edge infrastructure and open source applications.

Providing tools for automated maintenance (update and upgrade) of underlying operating systems and the published applications.

Implementing tools for administration (backup anyone?), monitoring, and alerting on the Edge.

While this website is an useful knowledge repository, it cannot really accommodate all of the needs that an open project, such as The Liberated Edge, may have. Therefore, our intention is to keep this website focused on the bread and butter of self hosting on The Edge.
Any other important and interesting topics will be picked up and further expanded on with the help of the community resources listed below.
